The distinctive silhouette and silver undercarriage of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress became a familiar sight for many Japanese civilians towards the end of World War 2. Developed as the final model in a line of Boeing bombers used in WW2, the B-29 became the U.S. Air Force's premier bomber in the waning days of the war. Equipped with the latest technologies, such as an electronic fire control system and remote controlled machine-gun turrets, the B-29 was capable of achieving altitudes and speeds corresponding Japanese aircraft could not reach, making it safe from aerial ambush and attack from enemy fighters. However, the aircraft's greatest claim to fame is its involvement in the critical mission that ended the war – the atomic bombs dropped over Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Two B-29s, christened the Enola Gay and Bockscar, were hand-picked by top military officials from their factories in Omaha, Kansas, and specially modified for the crucial mission.
