Just two short months ago GWS introduced their very first micro electric slow flyer, the Pico Stick. With its immensely popular appeal, GWS is now expanding their offering with the release of their second slow flyer, the Pico J3 Stick.
GWS's new J3 Stick allows you to jump into slow flying with ease. The J3 is GWS's semi-scale indoor version of the venerable Piper J3 Cub. With its spruce stick fuselage, foam wings and tail surfaces, molded wing mounts, and radio mounting hardware, the J3 can be ready to fly in about 2 hours. The kit includes a powerful dual ball bearing micro electric motor, a gear reduction drive system, and a propeller.
Weighing in at just 7.5 ounces ready-to-fly, the J3 is incredibly light. With regular take offs from the floor of our local gymnasium, we found the rate of climb to be excellent as we would climb just below the 20-foot ceiling in a matter of seconds. Cruising speed is estimated to be in the 5 to 8 mph range.
What is most incredible, though, is the achievement of flight times up to13 minutes on a 270mAh battery pack. The J3 is a fairly responsive flyer, a necessity for maneuvering in tight indoor locations, and has no bad slow speed or stalling habits. Due to its ultra-light weight, the J3 should be flown in totally calm conditions, whether you're indoors or outdoors.
In addition to the kit, you will need a micro radio system, a speed control, and a battery pack. GWS offers two flight packs especially designed for the J3, the Naro and Pico. The Naro Flight Pack includes 2 Naro micro servos, a 2-amp proportional speed control, a micro 4-channel receiver, and a 270mAh 7.2V battery pack. The Pico Flight Pack includes the same components, except the servo is the sub-micro Pico servo for reduced weight. In addition, you will need your transmitter and a matching frequency GWS micro receiver crystal.
